I'm so upset at David Ball.For years, I've enjoyed a comfortable smugness thinking I wrote better than most in my immediate circle of friends -- and now he's put an end to it with Triptych. This isn't a book you will buy if you're expecting a Dickens-length tome to last you through a long northern winter, nor even an extended southern rainy season. But if you have a mind and / or education that lends itself to high-level legal subtleties -- coupled with an Indiana Jones-esque curiosity and sense of adventure regarding other cultures and lands -- then Triptych can provide a weekend or even month-long immersion into a reality fused with unlikely villains and even more questionable 'saviors'.
You'll enjoy vocabulary-stretching yet fully readable passages that humanize both the characters and at appropriate points, the author himself. And you'll walk away grappling with issues of life, religion, and the sometimes hazy lines betwixt the two.

The reader is soon immersed by the writing quick-paced, vivid, moving, insightful, funny. And disturbing. While much described in TRIPTYCH shocks, in the final reckoning, it is the enthymeme which jolts. Creeping acceptance of relativistic thought into western culture, with its self-referencing rationale, might portend a future with no need for rules, traditions, or laws. David Augustus Ball, however, deftly spins a tale that illuminates a different future, one more terrifying than the chaotic, lawless society of our popular films and movies. Well worth a read and re-read!
I couldn’t stop reading. The story touched on multiple aspects,such as law, religion, and politics. I liked that the author gave us a history lesson as it relates to religion and law, which is helpful to a reader who may not be an expert on the subject.
I loved this book. It was informative and kept my attention. Great start of the summer read and I would reccomend this book to everyone. Can't wait for another book by this author to be released.
A disturbingly captivating read.
Difficult to do justice to such a complex book here. Suffice it to say if you want escapist entertainment, this is not the book for you. If you are looking for a book that will make you think after you have read it, this is the one you should read. Amazing it opens up so much to think about for such relatively short book. What is religion? What are the limits of Freedom of Religion? What are the implications for society with a fundamental reorientation in the way people think about life, love, sacrifice, pleasure etc?
If you aren't afraid to have your world view challenged...well worth your time!
I purchased the book last week and fought life to read it. Bound, determined, I picked up the book this morning and with the exception of a few interruptions finished it's last page wanting more from this author. I don't want to ruin it for anyone but you will have to read the book in order to truly appreciate the cover. Well done Dr. Ball.
Triptych is both a pleasure and a challenge to read. A pleasure because the story is intriguing and the writing superb. A challenge because it addresses the difficult and complex issues of what is religion at its core. It generates much thought about the mendacious practitioners of so many religions today. It begs the question are religions meeting their obligations to man? This is no small subject and is even accompanied by a mystical revelation in the South American jungle that explores this subject in depth. Then layer in some interesting legal discussion to round out the story line.
Triptych is a short but dense tale that entertains, challenges and delights the reader with an unexpected but highly engaging style and format.
