This is an inspiring story of three good friends with different cultures and beliefs in their journey to finding the genuine life treasures.

The Genuine Treasure Belen H Campugan 9781530886180 Books

I found this book extremely delightful and the kids did too. The depth of the culture explored in this book can't be overstated. You get a full understanding of the rich culture of the region and are left wanting to read more. That also explains why the kids wanted to hear this book over and over. The pictures are detailed and I had to stop and discuss each one with the kids in order to fully understand what was going on. With a google search I learned some of the foreign words in the book and the kids are ready to take a trip to this wonderous location!

The Genuine Treasure Belen H Campugan 9781530886180 Books Reviews

Filipino author Belen H. Campugan already has achieved her Masters degree in Education, and is a public school elementary teacher while earning her PhD in Educational Administration at Central Mindanao University, Maramag, Bukidnon, Philippines while continuing to write children’s books. Of special note the sales from this book may raise funds and continue to support the recipient of her outreach program - the less fortunate hinterland children and pupils of Rogongon, Iligan City, Philippines.

THE GENUINE TREASURE is illustrated by the talented artist Lucas V. Jimenez and is the story of Maalik, an indigenous Higaonon, Abdul, a Maranao Muslim, and Angelo a Christian Iliganon who while riding find a treasure map. On their journey they encounter an all woman who has no food and water and the three friends pause to share what they have. In gratitude the old lady gives the boys bamboo shoots, instructing them to plant them in their yards – a gesture she advises with make the boys grow with greatness in their hearts. ‘Your friendship, truthfulness, sincerity, loyalty and affection for each other were the genuine life treasures.’ A lesson well learned and far more important that the gold bars the found treasure map promised!

This is a very genuinely kind and thoughtful book that children will love and probably memorize – and hopefully transform their lives with warm hearts. Grady Harp, April 16
I was interested in this book because the illustrations caught my attention. They are vibrant and unusual, not at all saccharine as is sometimes the case with illustrations in books for children. I have to say, though, that the text was confusing, as the tenses varied and the story stopped very suddenly. If only the story had been developed further I would have happily given it a higher rating.
This book starts off in the classic storybook way “In the far hinterland of Rogongon, there were three good friends living with peace and harmony.”

The pictures are charming. They show three boys of different races having fun pursuing many activities. They are all identified in the story by race and religious distinctions. When they find a treasure map, an old woman appears. She is hungry and thirsty. The boys decide to share the food and water that they have with her. She rewards them with bamboo plants and gives them her blessing. Because of their good deed, they live happily ever after.

I think the story should demonstrate more character development for the boys. They just shared what they already had, and didn’t make any sacrifice for it. A reader wants to see characters struggle and develop some character trait, even in a classic story like this one.

I give it a 3 out of a possible five because of its shortness and the lack of attention to character development.
This is a cute and very simple book.
It's got a good moral story but it wasn't very engaging. I think it just didn't translate to a different region or culture very well.
We read it twice and haven't really gone back to it.
Nice illustrations and, again, a good lesson, just not very engaging for my 6yo.
This story has a wonderful message to share and the illustrations were colorful. I found the vocab to be too advanced for my son at times, and the grammar and punctuation needs work. It would have been great if the author included a little bit of info on the cultural aspects of this story, so the reader has a better understanding of the characters. With a little polishing, I think this story could be fantastic.
I found this book extremely delightful and the kids did too. The depth of the culture explored in this book can't be overstated.
