Fergusson Wright Hume, known as Fergus Hume (8 July 1859 – 12 July 1932) was a prolific English novelist. Finding that the novels of Émile Gaboriau were then very popular in Melbourne, he obtained and read a set of them and determined to write a novel of a similar kind. The result was the self-published novel The Mystery of a Hansom Cab (1886), which became a great success. Hume based his descriptions of poor urban life on his knowledge of Little Bourke Street. He sold the English and United States rights to the novel for 50 pounds, and thus derived little benefit from its success. It eventually became the best selling mystery novel of the Victorian era, author John Sutherland terming it the "most sensationally popular crime and detective novel of the century".This novel inspired Arthur Conan Doyle to write A Study in Scarlet, which introduced the character Sherlock Holmes. Doyle remarked, "Hansom Cab was a slight tale, mostly sold by 'puffing'." After the success of his first novel and the publication of another, Professor Brankel's Secret (c.1886), Hume returned to England in 1888.He resided in London for few years and then he moved to the Essex countryside where he lived in Thundersley for 30 years, eventually producing more than 100 novels and short stories. He continued to be anxious for success as a dramatist, and at one time Henry Irving was favourably considering one of his plays, but he died before it could be produced.

Hume was the author of THE MYSTERY OF A HANSOM CAB which is said to have been the best selling mystery novel of the Victorian era. The writing of Hagar of the Pawn Shop is good and the stories interesting though some are predictable. The book did not sell as well the hansom cab mystery. Just a little of the 19th century British attitude of superiority is noticeable. The thread linking all of the stories is a Romany Gypsy girl named Hagar who runs a pawn shop. There is some period slang easily understood in context.The free Kindle edition has some formatting problems with words breaking at the end of lines.

Fergus Hume, who is most famous for his novel THE MYSTERY OF A HANSOM CAB (1886), also wrote a collection of ten short mystery stories of very uneven quality titled HAGAR OF THE PAWN-SHOP (1898). To give his collection the appearance of being a novel, Hume introduced his stories with a non-mystery "chapter" titled "The Coming of Hagar" and rounded off the group with another non-mystery "chapter" titled "The Passing of Hagar." "The Coming of Hagar" is noteworthy for its wonderful list of the contents of the pawnshop and its commentary on these items, yet the back-story concerning Hagar (a beautiful Gipsy detective), Vark (a crooked lawyer who "loves" her), and "Goliath" (the late pawnbroker's son) is very far-fetched.
Some stories, like "The First Customer and the Florentine Dante," "The Fifth Customer and the Copper Key," and "The Eighth Customer and the Pair of Boots," amount to Fair-Play Puzzle Stories, which readers can try to solve. Others, like "The Second Customer and the Amber Beads," are Successful Adventure Stories (in this case, an innocent person was framed for murder and is cleared by Hagar). In still others, like "The Third Customer and the Jade Idol" (a tip of the hat to Wilkie Collins's THE MOONSTONE) and "The Seventh Customer and the Mandarin," we are given Thriller Stories (aka Sensation Stories). Probably my favorite is "The Fourth Customer and the Crucifix," a "What If--" Premise Story involving a dagger hidden inside an antique Italian crucifix.
Twice Hagar is involved with letters in the somewhat touching "The Sixth Customer and the Silver Teapot," an elderly blind woman is informed why her engagement was broken off long, long ago and is able to forgive one of her false friends before dying; in the mildly humorous "The Ninth Customer and the Casket," we learn what a wealthy aristocrat has really been up to.
A technical point-of-view flaw seems to exist in "The Tenth Customer and the Persian Bird" insofar as Hagar never learns the final outcome (though the reader does). A similar flaw exists in "The Third Customer and the Jade Idol." Different sorts of flaws exist at the end in "The Passing of Hagar," where she and her true love ride sentimentally off into the sunset in their Gipsy caravan to sell books--while "Goliath" returns and claims his legacy and the evil Vark is disposed of in a far-fetched manner.
In sum, parts of this book are excellent--but only parts.
Unreadable edition
The formatting in the version is the worst that I've seen yet. The type face is Courier like the old typewriters. The lines break in the middle of words. The other problem was the extreme slang which I didn't understand. The stories are good but they are hard to follow because of these issues.
This book evokes wonderful imagery and characters of the Victorian age. Definitely worth reading.
I little different, very enjoyable.
Very much a period piece- some decent writing in spots but Hagar Stanley isn't much of a detective. If you can't stand dialect writing avoid this book it's full of it.
The story is quite good. Unfortunately, the translation into format was quite poor. Many words abruptly truncate at the end of the line and resume on the following line. It took some time to learn how to read this type of text.
